We all have a career story...
…Mine is not linear. Some people know exactly what they "want to be when they grow up" and just go for it. I call these people the “Main Highway or I-95 Travelers of Life” ~ They merge onto the Highway of Life and take the passing lane to their career. That’s not me. I have been more of a “Blue Highways Traveler”. You know, following the little blue lines on the road map ~ the backroads filled with detours and adventure; the roads less traveled. In fact, I am still travelling…
I have tried my hand at a variety of jobs over the years from coffee roaster to community planner, and now career and employment expert, with lots of stops in between. Many times I found myself at a crossroads, uncertain, confused and deliberating which path to take. Sometimes I left all up to chance, (eeny-meeny-mynee-mo kind of chance), other times I went with my gut and more recently I also consulted with my head. Looking back, I sure could have used a career coach as a co-traveller ~ someone to offer perspective, help navigate and support me in developing the tools and skills needed to make good and sound decisions. Honestly, all that business of trying to figure out “my calling” or “what to be when I grew up” was hard work.
All of that said, in hindsight each of my roles has contributed to and cumulated in me arriving at the work I do now. Whether I was selling newspaper subscription, (yep, I was a dreaded telemarketer), bartending or teaching English as a second language, I always gravitated toward roles that were customer facing, service oriented and involved communication. As far back as I can remember, I always knew that I wanted to help people create joy and meaning in their lives. And so, although my career has looked like a tangled mess of unrelated types of work, it is actually more like a string of pearls fastened together into something valuable.
Little did I know that all along I had been on a mission and today I know that my purpose is to inspire and support dedicated, high-achieving professionals and industry leaders to make sense of their careers ~ to identify opportunities, choose strategies and secure work that they love. Whether job transitioning, taking a new career path or starting up a home based-business, I absolutely love helping people to uncover awesome and available opportunities that excite them enough to jump out of bed on a Monday morning with anticipation, not dread.
I am also passionate about helping people communicate their career stories while networking or in interviews in an engaging and memorable way that wins them face time with hiring authorities and secures great work, minimizing lost time and money. I enjoy the challenge of partnering with my clients to craft top-notch brands that are cutting edge and marketing material that is simple, attractive and outpaces them from the competition.
